As season 7, episode 4 of “Dexter” opens we find Dexter (Michael C. Hall) and Masuka (C.S. Lee) doing a forensic workup of Ray Speltzer’s (Matt Gerald) maze. They don’t find anything. No hair, no DNA, no blood. Speltzer was very clean and covered his tracks well.
Debra (Jennifer Carpenter) is at home trying to relax. She slides into a warm bath and falls asleep. As she sleeps she dreams that Dexter walks into the bathroom in a tuxedo and proposed to her at the same time she realizes that the tub is full of blood. The next day at work she confronts Dexter about Rita’s death. She wants to know why Trinity killed Rita when she didn’t fit his pattern. Dexter tells her it was because he was after Trinity. Debra wants to know if Dexter really loved Rita and if he can really be capable of loving anyone with who and what he is. He tells her that he loves her. As they talk Batista (David Zayas) calls and tells Debra that they have Speltzer in custody. With no forensic evidence Debra is going to have to get a confession out of him.
Across town Isaak (Ray Stevenson) and George (Jason Gedrick) and going through some papers that show Dexter’s identity. As they talk Quinn (Desmond Harrington) and a group of uniformed cops flood in and once again shut the place down. Isaak decides that he needs to create a suspect so that the police will leave them alone and the club’s bartender will do nicely.
Back at the station Batista sets Speltzer up then Debra comes in and knocks her interrogation out of the park. Speltzer confesses. That night Dexter invites Debra out for a drink to celebrate. Instead of being happy she lays into him. She tells him it was his fault Rita was killed and that Harrison shouldn’t be living with him. She says Harrison needs someone to protect him from Dexter. Dexter tells her the only mistake he made was not killing Trinity the first time he saw him. He tells Debra he is not giving up on his son, gets in his car ad drives off.
Isaak and George show up at the bartender’s house. They tell him if he writes a confession and signs it then uses the gun that killed the cop to kill himself they will make sure his family is taken care of for life. If not they will kill him anyway and his family will be left with nothing. He gives in to them and shoots himself.
The following day LaGuerta (Lauren Velez) goes to Debra and shows her the video of Speltzer’s arrest. He never gave verbal confirmation that he understood his rights as he was being arrested so the judge threw out the arrest and confession and now Speltzer is suing them for excessive force.
At the bartender’s house Batista, Quinn and Dexter work the scene. Batista doesn’t get why the guy would kill himself. Outside Isaak and George get a glimpse of Dexter at work.
When Dexter gets home from work that night he finds Jamie (Aimee Garcia) cleaning out Harrison’s old toys and it makes him nostalgic for when Harrison was a little baby. Later that night Dexter goes to the graveyard where Speltzer works and breaks into his R.V. He plans on drugging him there and using the R.V. as a kill room. As he digs around the place Speltzer walks in on him. They fight and Dexter is knocked out. When he wakes up he is in an industrial building. Hanging on the wall is a sign that says “run.” Dexter says he doesn’t run, he makes other people run. Then he sees Speltzer in his bull outfit carrying an axe coming towards him and changes his mind. He runs through Speltzer’s huge maze – his masterpiece – and end up in a room full of mannequins that has a strobe light flashing. The two fight again and Dexter escapes. He goes up the stairs when he thinks Speltzer wants him to go down and ends up on the roof. After some climbing and jumping he gets to the ground and escapes as Speltzer watches him flee.
When Dexter gets home he packs up Harrison’s stuff and sends him to stay with the grandparents for a few weeks. Meanwhile Isaak goes to Viktor’s apartment and gets emotional when he sees a photo of him and Viktor together. He vows to avenge his death.
Debra and Batista attend Melony’s (the girl Speltzer killed in the last episode) funeral. As they come out she sees Speltzer watching the funeral and loses it. She gets in his face and Batista has to restrain her.
Back at the station Batista runs his theory about the bartender not being Anderson’s killer by Quinn who isn’t so sure, but agrees to run by the club one more time with him to follow his hunch.
Later that night Dexter goes to the graveyard when he uses a shovel to knock Speltzer out. When Speltzer comes to Dexter has him strapped to a metal table in the funeral home’s basement. Speltzer goes crazy trying to escape, but it isn’t going to happen. He tells Speltzer that normally he would be cutting his face to make a blood slide, but he can’t do that anymore. He takes a stake and drives it through Speltzer’s chest. When Speltzer is dead Dexter picks up his box of slides and caresses them gently. He says he needs to clear away all the evidence and start clean. He puts the box of slides on Speltzer’s chest and pushes them both into the funeral home’s cremation oven, burning them into nothing but a few ashes.
After he has cleaned up Dexter is standing outside when Debra pulls up. He gets in her car and is happy she came. He tells her that the smoke coming from the chimney is Speltzer. She wants to know if he did this for her and he says no. He asks her how she feels about this and she tells him she is glad. Debra then turns to Dexter and asks, “What does that make me?” Season 7, episode 4 of “Dexter” comes to and end with Dexter looking her in the eyes and replying, “Human.”
