The seventh season of ‘Dexter’ (Showtime, Sundays 9:00 p.m.) continued this past Sunday night with a strong showing titled ‘Swim Deep’. Dexter (Michael C. Hall) finds himself winding through all sorts of obstacles this season, and while seemingly one was taken care of, another emerges as one of his toughest yet.
Isaac Sirko (Ray Stevenson) has been the vintage ‘big bad’ that this series has every season. The “tool kit” he brought to Dexter’s apartment proves that he is not a man to be crossed and even resembles Dexter’s own methods. The fact that Dexter already outsmarted this man and put him in jail seems a little odd. He is the strongest villain on the show since the Trinity Killer (Jon Lithgow) and it would be a shame if he is already gone. The writers must have something up their sleeves and plan to bring him back at a more opportune time. Right now though, they seem to making room for a different type of nemesis for Dexter: Hannah McKay (Yvonne Strahovski).
Hannah was kidnapped as a young girl and was forced to go on a Bonnie and Clyde type expedition with her kidnapper, Wayne Randall (Daniel Buran). When he was caught she was given immunity by the District Attorney of Miami for any crimes that he may have made her do. Now that she is helping the Miami police department find the bodies of victims buried locally, she is working closely with Dexter.
For the first couple of episodes that she is in, she comes off as an innocent young woman trying to get her life back on track after a horrifying experience. It even seemed that her and Dexter were attracted to each other and a new love interest would be introduced to the story. Now, Dexter sees something different. After finding the bodies of a married couple that Wayne had killed and buried, he found evidence that Hannah actually killed the woman. After confronting only her about his suspicions, Dexter now thinks that she was a killer and she enjoyed it.
While it’s definitely still a possibility that Hannah ends up as a love interest for Dexter, it seems a labyrinth of problems are going to stand in the way. If she is a cold blooded killer, Dexter can’t let her live. At the same time, maybe Hannah is actually stalking him and waiting for a prime time to strike. He is after all the only person who suspects her of still being a serial killer.
