“Dancing with the Stars” week 2, which aired Monday, October 1, 2012, brought some fabulous dancing to the ballroom. Sabrina Bryan and Gilles Marini both danced in spite of injuries and topped the leaderboard.
Sabrina Bryan stole the show with her amazing and daring quickstep. In scenes from rehearsal, she and partner Louis Van Amstel were practicing a move where they leapt up the steps, turned and then he dipped her, forward over the steps. It didn’t work out so well in practice as Louie both dropped her on the steps and then fell on top of her. She was slow to get up and in a good deal of pain. The final rehearsal clip was Louis asking Sabrina if she wanted to take the move out of the dance. The question remained unanswered until they hit the DWTS dance floor at show time.
Not only did they complete the move, they gave the best performance of the night. The couple scores this season’s highest score yet and the first 9. The judges awarded them a 26.
During week one of DWTS, Gilles pulled a hamstring and was in a good deal of pain. A trip to the doctor confirmed the injury and he was advised to give his leg a one-to-two week rest. Ever the competitor, Gilles was having none of that. He was careful not to re-injure the leg and took the necessary precaution.
Gilles pushed through the week and gave a knock out performance Monday night. His jive dance with partner Peta Murgatroyd earned the highest score for a jive of the evening. Head Judge Len Goodman said Gilles’ kicks and flicks were the best of the night. The couple scored a 25.5 for the dance, just a half-point off leader Sabrina Bryan.
These two couples demonstrate what “Dancing with the Stars” is all about: dedication, perseverance and showmanship. Had they not shown the behind the scenes clips, no one would have known that Sabrina and Gilles had suffered any kind of injury at all. Wait until later in the season when they are more polished and back in top shape. The dancing will be phenomenal!
Tune in tomorrow to see season 14 competitor Katherine Jenkins singing in the ballroom. Also performing on the results show are Cher Lloyd, a British recording star and Placido Domingo.
