Week two “Dancing With the Stars: All Stars” started off with 12 stars and their professional dance partners hitting the dance floor on Monday night, October 1, 2012. After tonight’s judging and tally of fan votes, it will be announced on Tuesday which couple will be going home.
Three couples stood out in tonight’s performance and it’s a safe bet that they will be returning next week. My top picks to continue on in the competition once again echo the judges.
#3 with a score of 25, Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough, dancing the Jive
Shawn’s cartwheel down the stairs was impressive and likely made points with the judges at the start. Derek danced into this week with a back injury, but he didn’t let it hurt his performance, which I think carried Shawn in liveliness and animation. Len said “There was just enough jive, just enough content, just enough technique.” Bruno called the performance “ … vibrant, exhilarating and eyepopping.” Carrie Ann dubbed the couple “All Stars sweethearts.”
#2 with a score of 25.5, Gilles Marini and Peta Murgatroyd, dancing the Jive
Gilles Marini pulled a muscle in his thigh last week and doctors cautioned that he could make it worse by continuing to dance. You wouldn’t know he was injured as he pressed on, showing up during week two’s performance bare-chested under his jacket, hair slicked back a-la Elvis, and pulling off an impressive performance. Peta’s costume of bra top and pajama bottom adorned with sparkly fringe complemented Marini’s look that Carrie Ann saw as “… a little John Travolta thing happening”. Gilles got a little emotional after the dance that he dedicated to his father, who passed away 17 years ago today.
#1 with a score of 26, Sabrina Bryan and Louis Van Amstel, dancing the Quickstep
The judges all commented last week that Sabrina over-danced her routine, but this week’s dance saw her bringing it down a notch or two, while still giving us a wonderful performance that put them on top of the leader board. Kudos to Louis for choreography that was a good fit for their chosen song, the lively “Black Betty”. Bruno claimed that it was like seeing “Ginger Rogers at her best”, while Carrie Ann let out a “Woo-hoo! … You had grace, you had drama, you were dynamic” and gave the couple the first 9 of the season.
Fan votes still need to be tallied, but I don’t think Sabrina, Gilles or Shawn are in any danger of going home tomorrow night. Keep an eye out for which of the 12 couples I think will be going home on DWTS by clicking on subscribe at the top of the page.
