Steampunk costumers in the San Francisco Bay Area will have the opportunity to wear their costumes on two days on Columbus Day weekend. The Period Events and Entertainments Recreation Society (PEERS) will be holding a Steampunktoberfest Ball on Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Masonic Lodge in San Mateo, Calif. On the next day, on Oct. 7, Swing Goth will be producing Steamstock at the Craneway Pavilion in Richmond, Calif.
Steampunktoberfest: The Crystal Palace Steampunk Oktoberfest Ball
This event is the more historical of the two. It will be a celebration of Prince Albert’s opening of the 1851 Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace. So it will be a combination of the famous German Oktoberfest with the advance of Victorian Steampunk science. Prince Albert will be presenting awards to the most adventurous, most creative and most original inventions.
Suggested costume is traditional Victorian evening dress of the 1850s, traditional Oktoberfest (dirndls, peasant blouses and shirts, lederhosen, etc.) and Victorian Steampunk attire. Modern evening dress is also appropriate as costumes are admired, but not required. Bangers & Mash will be playing popular 19th century waltzes, mazurka waltzes, polkas, schottisches and Victorian Steampunk set dances.

Steamstock – An Antiquarian Exposition
Steamstock is touted as a music festival from another time. Brian Gardner of Swing Goth, the producer of the event, says to “think of it as Woodstock from an alternate past, where airships filled the skies and swing was both gothic and electronic; people still wore top hats and corsets, and hippies were mad scientists.”
Musical acts include Thomas Dolby, the father of retrofuturism in music, and Abney Park, the most well-known Steampunk band. There are numerous other bands, variety show acts and cirque performers slated to go on stage during the festival. For a full lineup, visit: http://www.steamstock.org/lineup.html.
There will also be a lot of vendors who will be plying their Steampunk wares if you want to shop for more costumes, accessories and props. Costuming for the event will likely be more modern and fantastical than the PEERS Steampunktoberfest Ball.
