Conservatives are mocking a new Obama campaign e-card that asks: “Can I borrow $18,000 to help pay for my birth control,” Twitchy reported on Saturday.
The card, designed to tout Obama’s support for government-subsidized contraception, uses a number that is allegedly the lifetime costs for the typical woman who uses birth control regularly, Lifenews.com added.
Twitchy said that conservatives on Twitter “couldn’t resist giving it to Team Obama good.”
“Dear Mom, I need $18K for birth control. Why *no,* I haven’t ‘gone back on the coke.’ Why would you think that,” tweeted blogger Ace of Spades.
“Dear Mom, I need $18,000 for birth control for my girlfriend. I’m dating Ringworld,” Ace of Spades added.
“If you’re paying $18,000 for birth control, #youredoingitwrong,” added Lachlan Markay.
Twitchy said that a new Tumblr page “imagines how mom would respond to the postcard…”
“You TEXTED me my birthday card, but you handwrite this?” one card asks.
“You’ll hit menopause before you use $18,000 worth of birth control,” said another.
“Why? Is Joe Biden in town this week?” another asked.
“I’m sorry, are you buying a car to bring it all home in, too? It’s called CVS – check it out,” another card said.
Other cards in Obama’s series are designed to push the campaign’s “War on Women” theme in an effort to attract the female vote.
Sean Hackbarth wrote at the American Mind that the figure in the e-card looks as though it came from Planned Parenthood.
“$18,000 is a big number,” he wrote. “Where did it come from? After a Google search I determined Planned Parenthood is the source. A Spring 2012 newsletter from the Nassau County (NY) Planned Parenthood office has an infographic explaining that the health care law could save women as much as $18,000 in birth control costs over their lifetime.”
The Planned Parenthood graphic looks almost identical to one that was used by the Obama campaign, causing Hackbarth to draw two conclusions:
- There’s a lazy graphics designer on Team Obama.
- The campaign treats Planned Parenthood talking points as gospel.
