Halloween is still one month away, but that’s not stopping film and television production companies from unleashing some high-profile comic book characters and one dream of a horror-fest on Blu-ray the week of September 25th, 2012. Fanboys will eat up what is set to hit shelves, featuring an animated adaptation of one of the most beloved Batman stories ever, a wonderfully bizarre and engrossing horror anthology series, and last but not least the biggest blockbuster film of the year.
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns – Part 1
It served as one of the primary influences to the recent Batman blockbuster live-action film The Dark Knight Rises, so leave it to Warner Premiere Animation to tackle the literal adaptation to what many regard as the quinessential comic book Batman story. The Dark Knight Returns was released in 1986 by writer/artist Frank Miller (Sin City, 300) as a four-part mini-series that depicts an elder Bruce Wayne re-donning the mantle of Batman when Gotham City hits its worst depths of crime and corruption.
The first installment covers Batman’s return to handle the escalating gang problem known as the Mutants, only to find his re-appearance sparks the disdain of politicians, cops and old foes that have since tried to do no wrong. Warner Premiere releases Part 1 of the story with actors Peter Weller (RoboCop) serving as the voice of the aged Caped Crusader, Michael Emerson (Person Of Interest, Lost) as The Joker and Ariel Winter (Modern Family) as the new female Robin.
American Horror Story
In 2011, this thirteen-episode anthology horror series aired on FX and mesmerized viewers through it’s disturbing, haunting and wickedly scary tale about a family who moves into a vintage L.A. home and slowly find that it’s also inhabited by the souls of those who died within its walls in years past.
Created by Ryan Murphy (Glee), no viewer was safe from AHS’s raw, unpredictable twisty nature and bizarre but intricate mythology, which can only be enhanced now through multiple viewing in glorious 1080p high-definition. The series stars Dylan McDermott (The Practice), Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights), Zachary Quinto (Star Trek), Denis O’Hare (True Blood) and Jessica Lange (Grey Gardens) in a Golden Globe and Emmy-award winning role that is a phenomenal performance.
With the second season (entitled American Horror Story: Asylum) set to bow in October, this is a golden opportunity to see why Story made such a noise on the television airways to advance the horror genre. The season is collected on a 3-disc Blu-ray set and a 4-disc DVD set.
This is the big one digital video fans have been waiting for. The dynamite movie that collected a group of our favourite Marvel comic book heroes into one big blow-out of action hits with a 3D Blu-ray/DVD Combo, 2D Blu-ray/DVD Combo and standard DVD editions. The big guns of Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johanssen), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and The Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) must unify together to stop Thor’s maniacal brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) from setting off an alien invasion.
The movie was a blast of fun, nuanced and balanced brilliantly by writer/director Joss Whedon (Serentity) with a witty and action-packed script. It grossed over an astounding $600 million at the box-office and is on record as the highest-grossing comic book film of all-time during its theatrical run. Now that Marvel is owned by Walt Disney, expect the absolute best in picture and sound quality for your home entertainment systems.
Bonus features also include Deleted Scenes which fans may want to check out on certain characters, a Gag Reel and a special one-shot story that takes place in the aftermath of the film’s events. Entertainment does not get much bigger and better than this.
