A stalled out frontal boundary will remain west of the region today and never fully make it through as Hurricane Sandy begins to approach up the coast. Sandy, or the hybrid nor’easter post-tropical Sandy, is expected to impact our region Monday into Tuesday with an extended period of heavy rain and strong winds. Some showers and breezy conditions may impact the region into mid-week as the remnants of Sandy linger over the northeast.
- A High Wind Warning is in effect for the potential of strong and damaging winds from 6 a.m. Monday through 11 a.m. Tuesday. Wind speeds will strengthen rapidly Monday morning and will last through much of Monday night and into early Tuesday. Winds are expected to be sustained from the northeast at 30 to 40 mph, with gusts exceeding 60 mph in the valleys and 75 mph across the higher terrain. These strong winds will likely bring down trees and power lines with widespread power outages possible. Any loose objects will also be easily propelled into the air becoming flying projectiles.
- A Flood Watch is also in effect from Monday afternoon through late Tuesday night. Very heavy rainfall from Hurricane Sandy will lead to rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches in valley locations and 2 to 4 inches across the higher terrain and remainder of the region, expect in the Catskills where up to 6 inches may fall.
