At a time when the Earth is at a critical threshold – the Arctic ice is melting and a record drought is gripping the U.S., the time for critical reasoning is long past due. As climate change deniers continue to spread their agenda that there is no such thing as climate change and that we have nothing to worry about, a catastrophe of biblical proportions is silently lurking under the Arctic ice – tons and tons of methane gas.
This methane gas is 20 times more powerful than carbon dioxide and what’s worse is that not only is it being released into our atmosphere in record levels, research is now showing that it has possibly entered into a dangerous methane feedback loop.
What does that mean? Basically that we have now unleashed a sleeping giant that is going to only get worse unless we take drastic measures to control it.
Here at the Examiner I strive to report only on the truthful facts on climate change – I report on the extreme weather events happening around the world, post charts with research numbers and info by NASA and NOAA among others, and seek out the world’s top scientists and climatologists to use as sources for my news gathering. This is all done to present you with the truth to the best of my ability.
What’s disturbing to me is that there are still some very right wing journalists out there that are not only misleading the public but actually harming our goal towards finding solutions to our rapidly warming planet. Some of these right wingers have even charged that we don’t have a problem because hey, the Antarctic ice is at record highs! But what they don’t report along with that is that there are variables that go into the climate equation. Just because the Antarctic ice is freezing, this does not negate the fact that the Arctic ice is melting to record low levels!
The threat of a methane release is so real that that an explosive release of it could cause an extinction level event. Peter Wadhams, professor of ocean physics at Cambridge University, warns that the Arctic may be ice-free in summer as soon as 2015. Such a massive loss would have a warming effect roughly equivalent to all human activity to date. In other words, a summer ice-free Arctic could double the rate of warming of the planet as a whole. No wonder that leading NASA climate scientist James Hansen says bluntly: “We are in a planetary emergency.”
That of course is at the extreme of what could happen. Another scenario, and very catastrophic, is that this methane release will dump us into abrupt climate change, another very unpleasant Earth changing event. Abrupt climate change can occur within just months or years.
We are at a critical tipping point and the decisions we make now will determine our future and our existence. Playing into the climate change deniers hands is not only risky but downright fatal. To those of you that have said, “Gee our weather sure has been weird”, you are right. It has been weird and it is causing a problem. It’s not in your imagination, although climate change deniers would have you believe so.
The arguments for who caused what and why should be over and we need to find a solution to the ever growing threat of a catastrophic methane release into our atmosphere. And yes, there are solutions and ideas, which I will go further into in future articles.
Dr. Francis of Rutgers University says, “The climate system is changing in front of our very eyes. You do not have to be a climate scientist. I like to hope that, if there is a silver lining in all of this, it is helping people to wake up and realize this is a big problem. It is happening now. It’s not happening generations from now. And we need to start doing something about it.”
To find out more about Arctic ice, read here for further information from climatologists. To aid in the fight to secure our future, more detailed reports about methane in the Arctic can be found at the Arctic Emergency Methane Group. We need inventive and creative visionaries to help mold our future at this American and Global turning point.
The question is what direction we will decide to take as citizens of the Earth. It is very important now, more than ever, not to play into the hands of climate change deniers or skeptics. There is no more room for debate, only time for solutions to this rapidly growing threat to our very existence.
