O.J. Brigance is a former CFL and NFL player. O.J. played in the CFL for the Baltimore Stallions and in the NFL for the Baltimore Ravens. He won a championship with both Baltimore teams. O.J. is currently the Senior Adviser to Player Development for the Baltimore Ravens. In 2007, O.J. was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) or Lou Gehrig’s disease. According to the ALS association’s website, ALS is a “progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.
This prompted O.J. and his wife Chanda to start The Brigance Brigade which supports ALS patients and their families. Five years later, O.J. is celebrating his 43rd birthday on September 29, 2012. You can be apart of this celebration by signing O.J.’s card and making a donation to The Brigance Brigade. Click here for more information about signing O.J.’s card. Last week, Chanda Brigance, took time out of her busy schedule to do a phone interview with quadrust.com about the last five years of living with ALS.
When Chanda and O.J. first got the ALS diagnosis, Chanda said that they were shocked and cried a lot in the beginning. Then standing on their Christian faith, they said that God will get the glory out of this situation. Chanda said that she knows God may have decided to use her and O.J. for his work. She also said God never gives us more than we can handle and will never forsake us. Chanda said her and O.J. have learned to lean even more on God. O.J.’s diagnosis prompted them to establish The Brigance Brigade, a nonprofit ALS organization. Chanda said when The Brigance Brigade was established they made sure their focus was on supporting ALS patients and their families. The foundation also gives money to ALS research. The Foundation has branches in Houston, Miami and Baltimore.
O.J. has become the face of ALS. O.J. is admired for his courage and willingness to fight ALS publicly. O.J. and Chanda could have privately fought ALS. Instead, the couple has decided to fight ALS publicly to help the many unknown ALS patients and their families. The Brigance Brigade is also educating the public about ALS. Chanda has been standing by O.J. and fighting ALS with him. Chanda said that she and O.J. are still the same people they were before he played professional football. She also said they always want to look for ways to be a blessing to other people on a regular basis.
Chanda and O.J. Brigance are courageous, brave, and humble people of faith. They have decided to dedicate their lives to being a blessing to other people. You can help in many ways.
