Coconut water is supposed to be so healthy that it was once used in transfusions. See, Can coconut juice be used as blood plasma – Cocoscience. As a sports drink, if you’re sweating out salt, you need to add sea salt or sea vegetables back into your body in addition to all that potassium in coconut water. According to that site, coconut water is almost identical to blood plasma and this makes it easy to use for blood transfusion, it has been used as an intravenous hydration fluid.
Madonna invested in a coconut water firm, according to the site, Unbiased View on Coconut Water. Also, the article at that site notes that other celebrities endorsed coconut water and/or invested in companies selling coconut water. “U.S. professional tennis player John Isner gave a credit to coconut water for keeping him on his feet during the 11-hour marathon Wimbledon tennis match in 2010.”
Anthony Keidis-the singer of Red Hot Chilli Peppers and celebrity Rihanna among numerous celebrities that are either engaged in promoting, or even investing in the coconut water business. As coconut water sales doubled, the health benefits have been touted widely, especially when tap water competes for rehydration. Coconut water also has medical uses.

It’s amazing how many uses foods can be of help in when it comes to folkloric medicine.
Rehydration with coconut water versus plain tap water
Coconut water can be used for a variety of medical purposes, one of which is intravenous rehydration. A 2000 report tells of a stroke patient in the Solomon Islands who was too ill to drink or use a nasal tube but was successfully rehydrated with a coconut-water IV when no other fluids were available.

Celebrity investors back coconut water
The coconut water for health diet fad has been backed by celebrity investors including Madonna, Demi Moore and Matthew McConaughey. In fact last year coconut water sales doubled in the US and Europe to $US265 million last year and expected to double again this year.
Coconut water is used for hydration, including intravenous hydration of critically ill patients in remote areas. The natural sugars in coconut water has be shown in research to lower blood sugar spikes instead of raising them.
You can check out coconut water with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as to its use as drink containing a good amount of potassium important for heart health, regulating blood pressure and other body systems. You also get potassium from fruit and vegetables, including tomato juice. But tomato juice also has some natural sugar.
What you do get from coconut water are electrolytes, calcium, potassium, magnesium in a drink that’s only about 60 calories per serving, depending on how small the serving is. Some coconut water containers come in 11 ounce portions.
The latest diet fad includes coconut water because the sales of it are increasing
You have to realize that the minerals in coconut water are tiny amounts. For drinking liquids, plain water, clean, filtered, and pure is what your body needs rather than large amounts of sweet drinks of any nature.

Top selling coconut items include canned coconut water as impulse items set up at cash registers of some food markets. Coconut water is featured in cans this week placed in boxes next to the check out counters at the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op in midtown. Isotonic beverage with the same level of electrolytic balance as humans have in our blood
According to that site, coconut water is a natural isotonic beverage, with the same level of electrolytic balance as we have in our blood.” During the Pacific War of 1941-45, both sides in the conflict regularly used coconut water siphoned directly from the nut to give emergency plasma transfusions to wounded soldiers. It’s high in potassium.
For a sports drink, runners would need sodium, but for someone who is eating too much salt, perhaps you need to balance your sodium with a little potassium. Here are some facts about what’s in coconut water, according to the health benefits of coconut water site.
1. Coconut water contains more potassium (at about 294 mg) than most sports drinks (117 mg) and most energy drinks.
2. Coconut water has less sodium (25mg) where sports drinks have around 41mg and energy drinks have about 200 mg.
3. Coconut water has 5mg of Natural Sugars where sports and energy drinks range from 10-25mg of Altered Sugars.
4. Coconut water is very high in Chloride at 118mg, compared to sports drinks at about 39mg.
You also see cans of coconut water touted as a sports drink at various supermarkets and food stores currently and for the past few weeks. Online, canned organic coconut milk or coconut ‘creme’ is featured in cans in the natural foods sections of some Sacramento supermarkets.
Online and in some supermarkets, you can buy “Native Forest” coconut milk in BPA-free cans (according to its advertisement). See Native Forest Organic Classic Coconut Milk, 13.5-Ounce Cans (Pack). Look in the natural or organic food sections of various local supermarkets. Be aware that coconut milk, coconut creme, and coconut water are all different drinks from coconuts with different effects and uses.

And there are plenty of recipes that also discuss coconut milk remedies. Can you really stop chronic diarrhea with coconut milk or coconut oil in both humans and dogs? If you browse the natural healing sites, some suggest eating some raw shredded coconut, if you’re not allergic to coconut. Other sites report that coconut oil helps to heal mouth ulcers. Coconut milk is high in saturated fat. But it’s those medium chain saturated fatty acids, not the long chain saturated fatty acids in animal fat that fill up your arteries.
Coconut is a traditional South Pacific Islander remedy
It also works on humans as well as on dogs. You can even make a sugar-free coconut macaroon to give to your dog to help ease diarrhea. Of course, you’ll want medical advice. But if you’re stranded on a Pacific Island with relentless diarrhea, and you have no access to medical advice, think about trying raw, shredded coconut. The theory behind this is that coconut oil is anti-microbial.
According to Grandma’s Wisdom site, coconut milk helps curb diarrhea. And at Info-Barrel, stop diarrhea with pomegranates and coconut macaroons. Watch the brief video on the site that recommends coconut macaroons and pomegranate juice to control simple diarrhea. Make sure your problem isn’t caused by food poisoning from potato salad that went bad, in which case, see your doctor right away.
Making Coconut Milk from Fresh Coconuts
How to make your own coconut milk from fresh coconuts. For more detailed instructions on making coconut milk, see the “How to make coconut milk” site.
The translucent liquid inside a fresh coconut is coconut water. You make coconut milk by squeezing the grated flesh of a coconut with some hot water resulting in a rich white coconut milk.
Coconut milk is not coconut cream. To make coconut cream, refrigerate fresh or canned coconut milk. As the milk stands, it will separate into the upper layer called the coconut cream. And the thin lower layer called coconut milk.
Skim off the thick, creamy top layer. Use as coconut cream. The thin bottom layer is the coconut milk.
When buying canned coconut milk. look at the label carefully to make sure all it contains is coconut milk and perhaps guar gum to thicken it. You don’t need any other ingredients in the canned milk such as preservatives or chemicals to preserve the color. The most a canned coconut milk should contain is the milk itself and perhaps guar gum.
Fresh coconut milk is from a living plant and is healthiest to use. Find out which supermarkets in your area carry fresh coconuts. You can also try the Asian markets in your city. Here’s how to make fresh coconut milk at home.
Working with a Fresh Coconut
Make holes in the eyes of the fresh coconut with an appropriate metal kitchen instrument. Drain the liquid into a jar and put the covered jar in your refrigerator.
Place the coconut on a cookie sheet and bake in a 325 degree F. oven for a half hour. Let the coconut cool on a rack or metal dish and then place on a cutting board. Crack the coconut with a hammer to break it into a few pieces.
Remove all the coconut flesh and peel off the skin. Cut the coconut flesh into small pieces. Put the coconut meat into your blender with enough hot water to cover the peeled coconut pieces. Blend until fine.
Now press the finely ground coconut and the water through a sieve covered with a cheese cloth over a clean bowl. Your goal is to extract the coconut milk, that is, the mixture of hot water and finely ground coconut meat into the bowl. Now that the water is in the bowl, put the drained coconut meat in another container. You can discard it or use it to fertilize plants in your garden.
Pour the bowl of coconut milk into a jar or other covered container and immediately refrigerate the coconut milk that just has been extracted. Use it all up in the next two days.
Working with Dehydrated coconut milk
If you’ve bought an 8 oz package of unsweetened dehydrated coconut, just drop it into into a blender with some boiling water, about one cup of boiling water. Blend for about 30 seconds.
When the mixture is cool, place a strainer or sieve over a bowl lined with cheese cloth. Spoon the mixture into the cheese cloth. Fold the edges of the cheese cloth over the coconut meat. Twist and squeeze the ends to extract as much coconut milk as you can into the bowl.
Throw out or use as compost the squeezed out coconut meat. Refrigerate your coconut milk in a covered jar. Use it up within a day or two. You’ll find excellent recipes on how to make coconut milk at the How to make coconut milk site.
Pickle juice versus coconut water
Football players and other contact sports athletes are drinking pickle juice to relieve cramps and other pains. Check out the December 1, 2011 article, “Meet The New Sports Drink: Pickle Juice.”
Folk remedies are favorites of athletes if they work. One folk remedy is pickle juice for cramps and another is sauerkraut juice for acid reflux.
Drinking fermented (pickled) cucumber brine has been used for centuries. According to the article on the Post Game.com blog, pickle juice received media attention back in 2000 when Eagles trainer Rick Burkholder credited pickle juice as the secret weapon that helped his team stomp the Cowboys in Texas Stadium.
At that time the pickle juice reduced heat cramps as the temperatures on the field soared above 110 degrees. If you look at medical studies of pickle juice, one study done in 2010 at BYU proved the efficacy pickle juice.
Also older people swear by organic sauerkraut juice for acid reflux possibly caused by diminishing digestive enzymes due to age. With young athletes such as football players, cramps happened when athletes exercised to the point of mild dehydration. In the study, those athletes drinking pickle juice felt relief within 85 seconds, almost twice as fast as water or other sports drinks.
The reason why the pickle juice relieved heat-induced cramps for the exercising athletes is because pickle juice is full of salt and various other electrolytes. When you sweat too much you lose salt.
The pickle juice replaces the salt (sodium) along with other electrolytes you need. The electrolytes in the pickle juice come from the cucumber, the salt, and the fermentation process because the pickle also has other minerals such as magnesium and potassium. Cucumbers also help your body retain water.
Did you see the Pickle Juice Sport that was popular in 2006 as a bottled drink? High school athletes are also known to drink pickle juice. Athletes also can get electrolytes from coconut water, especially potassium and magnesium, if you don’t want the salt.
