With Conspirator, Lettuce, EOTO and JGB Band with Melvin Seals headlining Friday really how could anything go wrong? Catskill Chill Music Festival is definitely off to an epic start. Already sold out this festival at Camp Minglewood is a true treat with a killer lineup, incredible staff, friendly volunteers and a picture perfect venue.
Twiddle started out the afternoon hitting B Stage at 4:45 pm with their unique twist off the traditional jam sound bringing in an almost bluesy shred edge. The crowd ate up this Vermont-based four piece who the brought that good vibe starting the festival off on the perfect note. JGB Band with Melvin Seals was a personal favorite although everyone seemed to feel the same. This was a simply stellar set which included Stop That Train, Johnny Too Bad, Money Honey and Midnight Moonlight. Honestly it should have been a crime to miss out on all that pure sugar cane sweetness.
Conspirator tore the crowd up with their cover of Scarlet Begonias while Feed the Wolf brought the entire festival to their feet. Kung Fu just keeps upping the bar with ninja like prowess. Rob Somerville has an amazing funked out stage presence that turns the room into a grooving mass of happily getting down folk.
Lettuce took over dealing out crowd favorites like Bowler and Move On Up before ending on a high with Sam Huff’s Flying Raging Machine. By now the Main stage floor was packed out with chilled dancing machines while those who favored a more mellow time were digging the sweet stadium style seating that gave everyone a chance to see the all the top acts. Dopapod has never disappointed me. These guys from Brooklyn have been hitting the festival scene hard bringing their intense funk prog rock style down to the masses who can’t seem to get enough.
EOTO ended out the night with their never the same, always fresh blend of house, dubstep and old school electro dance with livetronic driven bliss. Michael Travis and Jason Hann can be trusted to melt your brain while flying you to the moon and back. Seriously with a line up this strong Catskill Chill was always a safe bet and tomorrow we’ve got Rubblebuck, Yonder Mountain Stand Band, Soulive, Particle, Zoogma, Headtronic and Break Science followed by Cornmeal, FiKus, Lotus, Damn Right!, The Heavy Pets, Yarn and Kick Rocks on Sunday. Hopefully you’re already here but if not next year buy the tickets early, mark your calendars and make Catskill Chill happen cuz cross my heart you’ll never regret it.
