Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Beckett (Stana Katic) have been doing everything they can to hide their personal relationship this season on “Castle.” But their secret love affair takes a backseat this Monday when a woman is murdered and all the evidence starts to point to Castle. Chicago TV Examiner has your first look at “Probable Cause.”
The episode starts out with Castle and Beckett being called to the crime scene. The victim, Tessa Horton, was found hanging from the ceiling and there are some strange symbols carved into her. The detectives do not find any prints inside the apartment and after talking to the roommate, it seems that the killer knew that Tessa was going to be home alone that night. Since there are no signs of forced entry, Beckett thinks the victim knew her killer and let him in.
Back at the station, Ryan (Seamus Dever) lets them know that they haven’t had any luck with the symbols. Castle points out that it seems like a ritualistic killing and a possible serial killer. Ryan also discovers that the victim had been making calls to a blocked number, which they traced back to a burner phone. The hard drive on her computer had been mostly wiped clean, but the roommate recalled that Tessa’s new boyfriend had recently bought her jewelry. Ryan leaves to follow up on that and Castle makes a joke about remembering to buy jewelry. Beckett tells him that she’ll remind him when her birthday is coming up and he teases her for dropping a hint.
But their humor is short-lived. After a photo surfaces of Castle in a jewelry store spending $12,780 on the item found in Tessa’s apartment, Beckett also finds evidence that he took out a cashier’s check for that exact amount. Castle insists that he has no idea what she’s talking about. The detectives search Castle’s place and find a bag containing hooks and wires that match the ones that were used to hang the victim from her ceiling. Esposito (Jon Huertas) arrests a bewildered Castle for murder.
Captain Gates (Penny Johnson Jerald) admits that even though she’s not a fan of Castle’s, she’s having a hard time believing that he did all of this. Beckett is relieved, but the captain insists that they need to follow the evidence, no matter where it leaves them. Will Beckett be able to clear Castle’s name?
