“I sort of accidentally blasted him in the crotch…seven times in the crotch.” – Carol Danvers
Carol Danvers grew up the oldest of three children in Boston and followed her father’s beliefs in the merits of hard work so she worked as hard as her two brothers in order to look equal in her dad’s eyes. Ever since childhood, Carol dreamed of becoming an astronaut, even hitchhiked to Cape Canaveral as a teen in order to view a launch. Unfortunately, her father didn’t see women as equals and when the family met with financial troubles he chose to send the middle child, Steve, to college despite Carol’s higher GPA. After high school Carol took a sales job until she turned 18, when she joined the Air Force with the intentions of obtaining a college degree and becoming a pilot. Carol quickly rose to the top of her Air Force class and recruited into military intelligence, being trained as a spy. During her time in covert operations, she worked with people such as Logan and Ben Grimm while also coming into conflicts with Victor Creed and Natalia Romanova.
Eventually, NASA requested Danvers for an open position as Head of Security so she retired from the Air Force as a Colonel to accept. While at NASA, Danvers became involved with the Kree Empire and met and befriended Mar-Vell. Shortly after, Carol was kidnapped by the Cyberex and hospitalized by a controlled Iron Man. Danvers was then kidnapped by Yon-Rogg while she was still in the hospital and while the alien was battling Mar-Vell, Danvers was knocked into a damaged Psyche-Magnitron, altering her genetic structure and making her a half-Kree superhuman (although originally unaware). After these recent events, Danvers was removed from Head of Security and reassigned to a smaller facility in Chicago, being demoted to a regular Security Guard. She eventually resigned from NASA due to her failing career and wrote an expose on the organization which burned a lot of bridges. Her book did make Carol a brief star however and she began working as an editor for many national magazines, but due to her alterations, Carol developed a dual-personality, becoming a Kree warrior during periods of blacking-out and also donned a costume created for her by the Psyche-Magnitron.
While pursuing her career as a writer and editor, Carol also took the name Ms. Marvel, eventually recovering from her fragmented mind with the help of Hecate and Ronan the Accuser, establishing herself as a premier super-heroin and working with colleagues such as Spider-Man, the Defenders and the Avengers. After being invited to join the Avengers, Carol quickly established herself as a valued member but eventually left the team due to a bizarre unwanted pregnancy by Marcus Immortus who manipulated Carol into believing she loved him and took her to his home in Limbo. Eventually after Carol escaped, she confronted the Avengers and expressed her resentment towards the team for falling for Marcus’ manipulations. After leaving the team, Carol left for San Francisco and cut all ties with the Avengers, which resulted in a battle between her and Rogue, leaving Carol virtually powerless aside from her augmented genetic structure. After the battle, Spider-Woman was able to rescue Carol, alerting the X-Men and Avengers of her condition. It was revealed that Rogue had drained Carol’s memories which were restored by Charles Xavier, but he could not return the emotional bonds linked to those memories.
Carol was later abducted by the Brood and exposed to an evolutionary ray that triggered the latent potential of her augmented genes and became Binary. Due to her loss of emotional ties, Carol left Earth and joined the Starjammers for a time until returning years later to save the sun by exhausting her cosmic energies and spending months recuperating at Avengers Mansion. Carol eventually rejoined the team as Warbird and overcame her emotional emptiness, alcoholism and reduced power levels. Thanks to Carol’s devotion to the team, she became instrumental in the defeat of Kang during the Kang Wars but eventually left the team to work for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as a high ranking agent. Carol was also one of the many Avengers who opposed Scarlet Witch during her breakdown and until the team disbanded, but eventually found herself becoming a part of the New Avengers. During the events of House of M, Carol experienced being the most popular hero on Earth and was dubbed Captain Marvel until being re-awakened by Emma Frost and Layla Miller in time to help revert reality back to normal.
During Civil War Carol sided with Iron Man and the Superhuman Registration Act, working with Wonder Man on several occasions and resulting in leadership over the Mighty Avengers, the New York branch of the 50-State Initiative. During her time on the team, Carol assisted in the fight with the Hulk and his Warbound and joined the fight during the Skull Invasion. After the invasion, the Mighty Avengers disbanded and Carol joined the New Avengers, refusing to join Norman Osborn’s team of Dark Avengers and was replaced with Karla Sofen. Osborn later attempted to kill Danvers in order to make Sofen the sole Ms. Marvel, but Carol split into four energy beings until she was able to merge back together. During the final battle with Sofen, Carol removed the moonstone from Sofen’s body, leaving her powerless and instructed Karla to redeem herself if she wanted it back. After the Siege of Asgard, Carol remained a member of the New Avengers to battle Hulk when he became Nul during Fear Itself and also developed an attraction for Spider-Man. During the most recent story arc, Avengers vs. X-Men, the Phoenix Force heads to Earth and Ms. Marvel was put on the team to stall the Force.
While in space, Carol encountered a resurrected Captain Marvel who had been revived by the Kree Empire using the M’Krann Crystal in order to unite and protect all the Kree from the Phoenix. Unfortunately, Mar-Vell along with the rest of the Kree were brainwashed into believing the Phoenix was their salvation until Vision managed to free them from the illusion, but it was too late to evacuate the planet. Mar-Vell realizes the Phoenix is coming to claim the portion of power used to resurrect him so he sacrifices himself to save Hala, leaving Carol to carry-on his legacy as the new Captain Marvel.
Carol has the ability to lift around 50 tons, but she can also absorb various types of other energy to temporarily increase her strength in an excess of 100 tons. Carol is also capable of running and accelerating to high speeds and suffers less fatigue, exerting herself to peak capacity for about 24 hours until it she starts to tire. However, she is capable of channeling absorbed energy to further increase her stamina to higher levels. Danvers is also durable enough to withstand high caliber bullets, impacts from great falls, various temperatures and powerful energy blasts without injury. Carol also has a seventh sense which allows her to subconsciously anticipate the moves of an opponent and has the ability to use absorbed energy to transform her civilian clothing into her costume. She can also fire powerful concussion blasts of photon and light energy from her hands. Carol is an accomplished pilot and combatant, being trained in armed and unarmed combat.
