One of the great things about covering the music scene is the chance to see previously undiscovered new bands that absolutely blow your mind with their AWESOMENESS! I was fortunate to see such a show at Liams Irish Pub in Colton, CA on Friday October 19th. The line up from start to finish was nothing less than spectacular and included Dead Moves, Stonz Thro, Burning In, and Feather Static. If you have not heard about these bands I am going to introduce you to them and tell you why you should check them out.
Dead Moves was a unique metal band because it was composed of 2 guys and 2 chicks that rock. Lead vocalist Melissa Pinion is gifted with the sound of an old school European Metal voice. Her strong voice was captivating and when you heard it you were drawn in. Bassist Peggy Murphy was not your average bass player, partly because she did not hide in the back and not take part in the band. Far from it; she was an active player and when the singer jumped she jumped. Guitarist Russell Ethridge played flawless and hard. Drummer (Don Jones) is a fast, hard double bass metal drummer. I would suggest Dead Moves if you want a good co-ed metal band with great lyrics and pro players.
Stonz Thro took the stage with a commanding presence. Lead vocalist Mike Folstonful has that old school hard rock voice. He knows how to engage the crowd and was at home on the mic. and stage. Guitarist Shannon Smith played as if he was born with a guitar in his hands. A true rock and roll lead player his riffs were artful and kickass. Bass player J. D’Amore towed the line and kept the heavy rhythm going. Drummer Danny Olsen was a a heavy hitter, playing so hard the PA and stage shook. He told us he took it easy on the drums that night because he didn’t want to overpower the band in a smaller venue. Let me tell you; he killed it. It is no wonder they played with such great rock bands as Warrant, Great White and more. Check them out if you want a good old fashioned hard rock set played by highly skilled musicians.
Burning In blew me away. Hitting the stage in costume, this band not only had the look, they had the sound. This show was true metal theater at its finest. Lead vocalist Lex gave an aggressive, in your face performance that couldn’t be missed if they were playing a huge arena show (which I hope they will be soon). You could not help but sit back and watch in awe. Lead guitarist Siggy is a true musician playing with high energy, passion, and skill that clearly showed throughout their set. Bass player Mikael was Phenomenal. I can’t describe him any better other than to say watching him play his 6 string bass was one of the best performances I have ever witnessed by a bass player. Drummer Q was metal, hard hitting and simply amazing. He is a great player to round out a Great band. I recommend this band to any metal fan who wants a solid sound and stage show all in one package. You might want to compare them to Slipknot in terms of their look, and in part their sound, but they are truly their own band.
Feather Static, a three piece Rock band, closed the night. This rock band was tight and multi-talented, and playing after Burning In, a good way to wind down the night. Guitarist/lead vocalist Humberto Iniguez did double duty and nailed it. Guitarist David Flores also did back up vocals and did not disappoint. Drummer Manueles Duran completed the trio, drumming like no ones business.
All the bands were stage worthy and gave one hell of a set. Each one strong in their own right they made a fan out of me. As always, support local music and check out bands that are new to you. You never know what ones will become your new favorite. Thanks to Peggy Murphy, aka DJ PJ, for putting together a A+ show!!!
