Mercy for Animals has released shocking video depicting employees of Bettencourt Farms performing particularly sadistic and heinously cruel acts of violence upon the cows at the farm. Bettencourt is a major supplier to Burger King. This video is very graphic and disturbing, but must be seen so that we can join forces to protect these defenseless creatures, and bring these law breakers to justice. We must consider the fact that those who perpetrate these crimes live amongst us. It is naive for us to think that their behavior while “on the job” is segregated behavior and that, otherwise, they are decent people. It has been documented that a shockingly high level of farm workers engage in domestic violence and drug and alcohol abuse.
The video depicts depraved acts of cruelty by a great number of the staff at Bettencourt Farms. The accompanying audio is equally disturbing as we hear the workers yelling, laughing and encouraging more violence. It is difficult to view, but must be shared so that these sentient creatures can find safety and peace.
Many of us have become aware of the horrors of factory farming and are taking action. We are advocating for the animals on factory farms in many ways. Many of us, however, continue to support the dairy industry as we are not aware of the particularly horrible lives dairy cows lead. The cows on dairy farms must endure a lifetime of cruelty. There is no relief for them during their years on the dairy farm. Daily, they experience pain, fear, and confusion from which there is no escape. They are sentenced to live their lives in a steel and concrete prison barely large enough to contain them. They are repeatedly impregnated to maintain lactation, and to provide for the veal industry. Calves are, literally, dragged away from their mothers to be placed in veal crates until they are ready for slaughter. These young calves are beaten, prodded, and dragged to slaughter when their bones become to weak to support them. Cows experience many cruel acts performed routinely and unquestionably by the dairy industry.
There is a myth surrounding the dairy cow. It is the humane myth. Be certain there is no such thing as a humane dairy farm. The demand for dairy products is so great that dairy farms are expanding rapidly. Along with this expansion comes the continual push to produce more and more for the public. This effort to mass produce triggers a mass of deplorable conditions that, by consuming dairy, directly affect us.
Also, consider what you are consuming when you choose dairy. For generations we have consumed milk with the assumption that it is needed to sustain our calcium levels and prevent osteoporosis while maintaining strong bones. This has been proven false time and time again. The fact is that humans are the only mammal that is not weaned, and that drinks the milk of another species throughout adulthood. GOT MILK. Have you wondered who initiated and promotes this campaign? It fueled by the dairy industry itself – not by doctors or health advocates. The dairy we consume is laden with toxic chemicals that we are not made aware of. The filthy conditions and continual stress that the cows endure also taints the products derived from their milk. In the dairy world cows are a commodity not living, feeling creatures.
Also, consider the facts regarding cheese. Cheese is addictive. That is why we crave it – it works on our brains as an opiate. The dairy industry, when looking for more ways to profit, invented “string cheese”, and by promoting it to parents as a healthy, convenient snack, exposed children to the dangers of dairy consumption at a very young age-addicting them for life. The campaign proved to be one of the industry’s most successful.
The consumption of dairy has been proven to directly and very significantly affect our cholesterol levels. Continually high cholesterol levels adversely affect us in a great deal of ways. Cheese and milk also contribute to childhood obesity and begin a cycle of health issues for the young that will progress as they mature.
This is the reality of dairy farms. There is no “happy cow”. Cows are not wandering, contentedly, through green pastures. They are in hell. Their lives of misery will end when they are transported to a slaughter house where they will die in fear and pain.
Please be aware of what you are consuming. Do not make unthinking choices. Become your own health advocate, and an advocate for those you love.
