Sunday, October 28, the five ‘Breaking Amish’ cast members returned home to reunite with their families in Pennsylvania and Ohio. As one might expect, they were all met with rejection as they all showed up in their “English clothes.”
This episode mainly centered around Kate. She flew on an airplane for the first time, and had a heavy mind on the way home. She knew that her family was going to be angry, and was dreading the conversation. Emotions were running high, and she told the camera that she doesn’t think she is going to be the same person ever again.
As we see her approach an old group of friends playing volleyball, they immediately run away from her. She said that she knew those girls her whole life, and it hurts that they won’t talk to her. She realizes that they likely are uncomfortable because of her being dressed in English clothes.
Kate then takes an Amish taxi to her parent’s house. We watch her walk in, but the camera cannot follow her in. A little note on the screen tells us that due to her father’s Amish beliefs, they were unable to record Kate’s talk with him. Understandably, this would make perfect sense in the Amish community. The conclusion of her return home? Her family doesn’t want to see or have anything to do with her. She said that her father informed her that no one wanted to see her, and that he can’t be around her like this. Her Mom wouldn’t even come out to say hi, and she didn’t get to see her brothers. No one gave her chance to explain herself. On that note, she heads back to New York. She has decided to stay English and pursue her modeling contract.
Jeremiah said he knew that a lot of people were going to be mad at him. Nonetheless, he returns to Holmes Co., Ohio. He wants to see his family, and girlfriend Ivy, but knows he took a huge risk. When Ivy sees that it’s him at the door, she slams it shut without talking to him. Later on, he tells the camera he is going to see his parents to let them know his decision. However, the last time he seen them he got them in trouble with the bishop. He asks that TLC not follow him there. Hmmm…does this not make all the allegations seem true? If Jeremiah has indeed been gone from the Amish for 14 years as allegations say, his return at this point wouldn’t make sense. On that note, Jeremiah has recently admitted on several occasions that he’s been kicked out of the Amish, and doesn’t claim to be a poster child. Taking all of that into account though, we still hear nothing about his 3 children. Jeremiah tells us that his mom saw him walking up the driveway, and locked the door. He said he told his Dad what his decision was, and though he’ll never approve, he just kind of lets it be. He then says he probably won’t stay in Ohio.
Abe’s return home was extra noteworthy. He made the decision that he is no longer going to be Amish, and decides to tell his family face to face. He says he didn’t want to dress Amish, because he doesn’t want to be a hypocrite. Abe faces the dilemma of choosing Rebecca or his family, and he says his family must choose him or the church.
We got the chance to see Abe’s mother Mary again, along with more of his family. She is making Abe’s favorite dinner when he walks in. She informs him that he is not to be wearing clothes like that in the house. Abe’s brother agrees with his mother, and then Abe slams his brother to the camera saying that he doesn’t follow all the rules either. He has a buzz haircut after all! His mother lets him know how hurt she is by the way he is dressed, and tells him that he can’t sit at the table with them. As Abe sits separately from his family, his brother brings him his bowl. Abe asks what is with all the silence, but it appears that he has been for the most part, disowned. Upon realizing that his family must shun him because of their church’s beliefs, he knows it’s a no win situation if he wants to marry Rebecca, and remain English. His family then asks him to leave after he is done eating. Abe then reminds his mother that she will always be his mom and he will always talk to her. The camera stays for a moment after Abe’s departure, which frustrates his mother. Abe’s brother then asks the camera to please leave.
Perhaps one of the most ‘shocking’ points in this episode was Rebecca’s homecoming. After seeing her old friends run away from her in a restaurant, she arrived to an empty house. She goes in through the basement, and walks through her old home to find that everything is gone. She phones a family friend to see what happened, and they inform her that her grandparents have moved. She says that she has no house, no family, and no Abe.
She then decides to call Abe to tell him what happened. He arrives at her house to comfort and console her. He then tells her that neither of them has anything, except each other. He wants to salvage the relationship, and marry her. Though Rebecca is excited that Abe still wants her, she asks what they are going to do without high school diplomas, and where are they going to go without any money? She wants this new chapter with Abe, but is rightfully considered about their well-being. Abe then talks her into going to Lancaster where they will start a new life. He decided that sometimes your hometown just isn’t your hometown anymore. The two begin wedding planning and are shocked to find out the cost, and fine details that go along with it.
Abe then phones Jeremiah to ask him to be his best man, which Jeremiah is honored to accept. Jeremiah is excited to go to Lancaster to be there for Abe, and emphasizes that he wants things to go further with Sabrina.
Speaking of Sabrina, we didn’t see anything about her return home…..if it truly happened at all.. We see her in the car on the way there, but that is it. They kept us in the dark about the outcome. It is not until almost the end of the episode that we see her again. She meets Rebecca at the bridal store to help her pick out a dress. Rebecca finds the dress of her dreams, and then asks Sabrina to be her to be her Maid of Honor, which she happily accepts.
Guess that means Jeremiah and Sabrina will be walking down the aisle together too, huh?
Interesting side note: Sabrina admits to the camera that she was married in 2009, and that she and her ex-husband decided to go their separate ways. There we have it folks! Not one…but THREE cast members have now admitted to previous marriages.
Back in New York, Kate meets with her modeling agency again. She gets the keys to her new apartment which she will share with other models. Discouragingly she is told that 80% of models that go into the apartments don’t make it. She has to finish her paperwork and registration. Her representatives educate her about the next couple weeks. She is excited to have two castings on her first day (only on television people….only on television). Her bosses seem strict about everything from a scab on her arm to her measurements. Later, she is told she has a great face, and a good body, but that she would get great cheekbones if she lost 5 pounds. Oh dear….here we go again!
Something to ponder: Anyone else find it fishy that Jeremiah’s girlfriend is Amish, yet was dating a “divorced” man. How can she truly be Amish and do that? Although Jeremiah has been somewhat honest on certain topics, it seems like there is still a great deal of shadiness surrounding his character. However, Jeremiah has indeed addressed many of our previous questions. He has even been posting on the ‘Breaking Amish’ Facebook pages. He even went as far as to release his police reports proving that his arguments with his wife were only verbal, not physical. Perhaps, Jeremiah has been treated too harshly by the media? After all….there are two sides to every story.
We do know that allegations are being addressed each week, and every episode is even more interesting than the last. What do you think will happen next week? The only way to find out is to keep watching!
