To no one’s surprise Catching Fire finds itself at the top of the list. Two other movies in the top 5 were able to hit double digits despite the big competition this week.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAzGXqJSDJ8) hits triple digits over the weekend grabbing $161.1 million it’s opening weekend in the US and $307 million worldwide. This surpasses it’s $151 Hunger Games opening. This is also the 2nd highest opening of the year behind Iron Man 3’s $174 million opening. Catching Fire was able to to break the record for the highest opening for a November movie, shattering 2009’s Twilight: New Moon’s $142 million opening in November.
Falling to #2 is Thor: A Dark World (Clip ‘Dinner Crash’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zExHbsYgz4) with $14.1 million, bringing the 3-week total to $167.8 million. The movie currently holds the top box office for the month so far, but no doubt that Catching Fire will grab that title next week.
Dropping to #3 is The Best Man Holiday (Clip ‘Panties’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82n9M6SMKao) with $12.5 million. This brings the 2-week total to $50.3 million. The movie had a strong opening and dropped significantly, but still is having a good box office already besting it’s $17 million budget and getting a 66% approval from Rotten Tomatoes.
Premiering in #4 spot is Delivery Man (Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tfsiz79yJg) with $8.2 million. The movie hopes to have a better 2nd week as the hoopla slows down and the 35% approval rate might help that happen.
Rounding out the top 5 is Free Birds (Clip ‘Baby Turkeys’: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rkl5mKFf1Ok) with $5.3 million, bringing the 4-week total to $48.5 million. This is yet another cartoon movie that was not able to get any ground this year and looks like it might fall out of the top 5 next week.
There are two movies set to come out this week. Yet another cartoon movie about a young woman who goes on an epic journey with a man and a snowman in Frozen; and a man tries to take down a meth dealer in the south in Homefront. I’m sure Frozen will make it to the top 5 and Homefront has a shot, but I doubt any movie at the box office will give Catching Fire trouble for the top spot. That movie will probably remain there until mid-December when the new Hobbit movie comes out.
