Cumulating all the confectionary pop of a doc candy shop, “Katy Perry: Part of Me” supplies just that, a mere part of the overall doe-eyed and dazzling singer. And while there is probably a more intriguing, well rounded story to be told from the lyrics left unsung by this fluffy little number, this look into the thoroughly likeable and gifted Perry is a sweet fan-made treat.
Reminiscent of a purple-haired “Truth or Dare” – but thankfully without many of Madonna’s brassy theatrics – the film follows Perry everywhere, from meeting fans backstage, to rehearsing, to pushing for her own voice in an industry keen on cookie-cutter crooners, and while many; perhaps even more mature, vocalists might have eventually shown cracks in their phony façades, Perry successfully conveys both her confidence on stage and her authenticity off it.
The extras menu offers the usual playlist of supplements, consisting of a few live concert performances, a charming 5+ minute look at the singer and her grandmother, and her turbulent prep work for her Brand-slam Grammy performance. The standout however is the six-part “Behind the Scenes of the California Dreams” supplement, which though in and of itself seems redundant given the feature, still brings many heartfelt moments on Perry’s tour.
Included are candid looks at Perry learning new choreography, her real-life BFF Shannon Woodward, getting tattoos with her crew and father, attending a surprise birthday party, Perry’s interaction with other celebrities, and what it takes to bring a song from her head to a hit.
So through the garish Blu-ray cover, you’ll find a sugar like no other, it’s surprising to discover, genuineness never undercover, and though parts may make you blubber, this little firework…you will love her.
