Decorating is a task that many of us enjoy doing on the weekends. People even spend countless hours each week watching decorating shows on HGTV in hopes of getting some new ideas for how they can decorate my bedroom.
Whether you moved your bed around or got a new bookshelf, we’ve all spent time trying to decorate our home to fit our personalities. Even though people may have done some great things with decorating their bedroom, there have been quite a few interior decorating mistakes… even disasters that have been made along the way.
Here are my top five biggest mistakes I committed trying to decorate my bedroom and bathroom.
Ugly Paint Color
Have you ever found a color in the store you thought would be perfect for your bathroom, but in the end it turned out nothing like you thought it would? Yes, me too! I purchased this gorgeous light pink paint color to help bring light into my tiny bathroom. Unfortunately, it turned out looking Pepto-Bismol pink and not the beautiful light pink that I wanted.
Don’t paint the room right away and purchase multiple paint colors. This way you can put a little bit of each paint on your walls and see which one will look better. Then return the colors you won’t use. Always have options!
TV Stand in the Corner
You’re probably scratching your head wondering what’s wrong with placing your TV stand in the corner. When I first thought about doing this I figured it’d be great placement, but I was wrong. After placing my TV stand in the corner I quickly realized that I can’t get to the DVDs and Blu-Ray movies that are on the left side (my right) of the TV stand because the wall is blocking it. It was a great idea in theory, but not very practical in the long wrong.
If you’re placing a TV stand in the corner make sure to have it on a slant so you have access to both sides of the TV stand. Or purchase one where your movies are stored in the front and not on the sides. That was my big mistake!
Adding a Closet
I live in a town home and my bedroom was original a loft. So in order for it to sell as a three bedroom home, instead of a two-bedroom + loft, we had to add a door (Yup, I had to live a few months without a door) and a closet. Normally the closet would add additional storage space. But really I lost space because of the closet and where it was placed.
So this is more of a minor mistake. I needed the closet, but it was placed in the wrong spot, causing me to lose even more space in my already small bedroom. If you’re going to add a closet, make sure it’s put in the right spot. I have a nice indent right by door where my TV is, that would have been the perfect spot for a closet. It would have given me the additional storage space I need without taking up additional room.
I could spend hours walking around IKEA. It’s one of my favorite stores and I absolutely love putting together furniture from there. As someone who has used a lot of the storage furniture pieces I can say that they’re pretty hit or miss. When we first moved into the town house I needed some storage space for clothes. I was a full-time college student working part-time so I couldn’t afford anything expensive. This is why I always recommend IKEA. So I bought one of those mini closet type pieces.
Not only did it barely hold my jacket and three or four pairs of jeans, but also the doors kept breaking off. Not only did I waste almost $100 on that, I had to go out and buy another piece for my clothing. This time I went somewhere else and purchased a nice armoire.
Here’s a tip. Don’t go the cheap route when buying certain types of furniture. A bookshelf? OK, go cheap. A TV stand? No. It’s going to hold a really expensive TV so I wouldn’t go cheap.
Too Many Accessories
OK, raise your hand if you went a little crazy on accessories the first time decorating a room? Come on, be honest now. We’ve all been there before. We don’t exactly know what to do with accessories so we often find ourselves over doing it. I’m completely guilty of this.
So what is my mistake with accessorizing my apartment? Filling every inch of my armoire, nightstand, desk and TV stand with random accessories. It basically looked like the accessories section at Target threw up in my room.
Ladies, remember when you first started wearing makeup and you were told less is more? Well, the same goes for decorating your space with accessories. Don’t over do it! Depending on the size of your furniture and the accessories, just place one or two items on your dresser and TV stand.
Making decorating mistakes is something that many people have done. It’s OK. Decorating has always been a learning process for many of us. When you make a mistake, you learn from it and try something different.
