The results are in for the best fast food in 2012. In the Zagat survey, fast food establishments are broken into two categories: large which includes chains that have 100 to 5,000 locations in the United States and mega chains which have more than 5,000 locations. Some of the results may surprise you.
Top rated food vs. the most popular
In-N-Out Burger took first place in the Top Rated Food category. They were followed by Papa Murphy’s, Chipotle, Panera Bread, and Bojangles. Of the mega chains, the coveted first place went to Wendy’s, with Subway, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and Burger King filling out the top five spots. While these were voted as the top rated food, not all these chains made it into the top five in the Most Popular category.
Of the most popular large chains, In-N-Out Burger again took the top spot, while Panera Bread moved up to number two. Chipotle stayed at number three, but Five Guys and Chick-fil-A filled out the list, totally eliminating Murphy’s and Bojangles from the most popular list. The mega chain number one spot for most popular went to Subway which bumped Wendy’s to number two. McDonald’s, Taco Bell, and Burger King finished up the top five in that order.
Top rated fast food service
Along with best food and most popular, the Zagat survey asked the public which fast food chains had the best or “top-rated” service. In the large sector, In-N-Out Burger claimed the number one spot again. Papa Murphy’s came in second, followed by Jimmy John’s, Fazoli’s and Panera Bread. For the mega chains, Subway took first, Wendy’s came in second, Taco Bell, third, and the top five finished up with Pizza Hut and McDonald’s.
Overall best fast food
The last category for fast food chains was the Top Overall category. This took food, service, and décor into consideration. In the large chain category, In-N-Out Burger came in number one again, followed by: Fazoli’s, Panera Bread, Papa Murphy’s, and Chipotle. Wendy’s claimed the number one overall fast food slot for the mega chain category with Subway coming in second, followed by Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and McDonalds.
Which fast food is the most nutritious?
While this survey took into consideration top rated food, you have to wonder how respondents made their choice. Many of the winners are known for good fries, burgers, biscuits, and other favorites. In this day and age when the government is infiltrating the business of eating with new rules and regulations trying to limit what and how much we eat, Fitness Magazine points out we can make healthier choices, even when eating fast food. For instance, they point out that a McDonald’s hamburger is only 260 calories and when coupled with a side salad topped with the low-fat vinaigrette for another 60, it is possible to eat fast food and not go over the top. However, McDonald’s is known for the best fries, and a medium fries packs in another 380 calories. How many people plan to eat a small regular burger and no fries!
Of the above fast food chains, many also made the The 10 Most Unhealthy Fast-Food Items on America’s Menu list last June. The truth is the food at full service restaurants is often just as unhealthy as fast food. When it comes to eating out and healthy nutrition, it all comes down to personal choices, and how often we make the wiser choice.
