We’re a week into Autumn and this week will have us just coming away from a Full Moon touring the constellation of Aries; time to wind projects downward and done-ward; completion.
Growing up in Los Alamitos (northern Orange County), California, we were suburban farmers. My Leo dad grew cucumbers the size of footballs and the best tasting, flavorful, plump, juicy tomatoes in the world. The garden came with us up to Oregon in 1976, but it was never the same. High-altitude gardening is very different from sea-level gardening!
As a curious kid, I used to love flipping through the pages of the Farmer’s Almanac and perusing the broad and fascinating spectrum of stuff about the Earth. There’s so much wisdom passed down through the experiences of each generation; tips and tricks of the living; random issues of humanity; a valuable resource for farming and living with and close to the land.
According to the online Farmer’s Almanac:
From Full Moon through the last quarter, or the dark of the Moon, is the best time for killing weeds, thinning, pruning, mowing, cutting timber, and planting below-ground crops.
A time for endings; winding things down; resolving. Cycles.
The planets this week
For those in our region, northwestern North America, the Sun in harmonious Libra is brooding in the 12th house. 12th house is dark, karmic, soulful, hidden, deepest waters; light and Airy Libra doesn’t much like it here. It’s a challenging place to ‘shine.’
The brilliant astrologer, Isabel Hickey, says this about Libra:
Libra is the turning point in the evolutionary process. The nadir of selfness has been reached and in this sign, relationships involving cooperation are born. This is the ‘union’ or marriage sign of the zodiac, and the soul can no longer function in the ‘me’ consciousness. It has to become the ‘we’ consciousness.
Now the soul has to balance the world of appearance (the personality) with the inner world of reality (the soul). Venus is the ruler of this sign for only through love and cohesiveness can true union be attained.
On the surface is there is a diplomacy and sweetness, but beneath the velvet glove is a fist of iron. It’s hard for a Libran to believe they are dominating and self-willed, but it’s true.
Another gifted astrologer, Linda Goodman, says this about Libra:
The mission of Libra is to lead in a mental, aggressive, dynamic and idealistic manner. Libra’s gift is that love is beauty. Beauty to the ego is quite subjective, but to the universe, our beauty comes forth as we harmonize our energies to its song.
The lesson of Libra in love is that love is harmony. Co-operating with others is the key to the divine unions we desire and harmonizing with others is what beautiful music is made from.
On Sunday, the feeling-nature Moon still in Full at 9:30 a.m. (PDT) is in impetuous Aries until 4:27 p.m., when it goes into the farmer and builder of the Zodiac, Taurus.
Moon River moment
A special thanks to Andy Williams (Sagittarius); Moon River is one of my all-time favorites; his was the first album I bought as a teenager.
Follow this link to a sweet rendition punctuated by the gorgeous Taurean, Audrey Hepburn, in some scenes from the classic, Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Back to the other stars
In astrology, aspects are the degrees between planets and the resulting vibration.
It’s similar to a musical orchestra or band. How does the trumpet sound when placed next to the violin; or the clarinet? How does the flute sound when next to the drums; the guitar? It’s just energy and alchemy – the blending of energies.
It’ll be a Gibbous Moon around Wednesday for the Presidential Debate, and, more importantly, the celebration of one of my life’s most precious creatures, my beautiful daughter (Happy Day, Livo! Love you); and into Third Quarter Moon on Saturday.
On Thursday at 4:46 a.m., the Moon will move into the constellation of restless, dualistic Gemini until Saturday afternoon at 5:46 p.m. when it hits nurturing, sensitive Cancer.
Mercury is in artistic, indecisive Libra. Our physical senses are especially keen and aware of beauty – good timing, too, as the vibrant, gorgeous fall colors begin their pageant.
This is my absolute favorite time of year! Crisp, brisk morning air; warm days; foliage on stage; cool, clear evenings; apple, pear and squash season; the incredible aromas of being able to cook again; holidays and snow just around the bend!
What are Venus and Mars sparring about?
Venus, values, is still in theatrical Leo and action-oriented Mars is in healing Scorpio. And, they’re still in a square; and will be until one of them moves out of the constellation it’s in.
In the wheel with the natural zodiac, all signs 90 degrees away from one another are in a square: Aries is square to Cancer and Capricorn, therefore, Libra to Capricorn and Cancer is also in a square. Taurus and Scorpio are square to Leo and Aquarius. Pisces and Virgo are square to Sagittarius and Gemini.
The classical war between the human sexes is not what these two planets are presently bickering about. It’s the signs they’re both in; they square one another on the wheel.
Venus is in theatrical Leo and Mars is in healing Scorpio. When disputes arise between drama and combat, destructive explosions can occur; that’s why astrology has been cautioning us to watch our tempers in the past few weeks.
The alchemy of Leo and Scorpio: The Lion and Insect/Eagle/Phoenix
Leo is prone to display; Scorpio is very secretive. Leo is Fire; Scorpio is Water; combined they make steam…hot, obscuring…hot fog. Leo demands; Scorpio manipulates. Leo idealizes; Scorpio heals. Leo shines; Scorpio hides. Leo delegates; Scorpio creates.
Combined with some Node stimulations, Venus’ current prod is to ‘grow up.’ Venus represents values; right now, Venus offers us a chance to change our values; grow up; reach for higher fruit.
From my chart:
Venus is our capacity to attract and appreciate the things of the physical world, whether emotional, physical, mental or spiritual things. Defines the type of people you draw to yourself, based on your social values; personal affections; appreciation. Social urges; beauty. Values – what we appreciate. Art. Attraction and cohesion. Melody and song. Love of luxury.
Rules blood circulation, kidneys, ovaries, throat, skin eruptions, and equilibrium; also generative troubles. Venus also rules two signs: Taurus and Libra. Also rules the 2nd and 7th houses.
The glyph represents a goddess or flower ready to attract pollination. Five positive keywords: harmony, devotion, refinement, affection, responsiveness. Five basic keywords: values, love, beauty, sociability, cooperation. Five negative keywords: laziness, indifference, self-indulgence, superficial, flirtatious.
Wherever Venus is located in the natal chart indicates that the house affairs concerned are of importance in the resolving of karmic obligations.
Since these affairs need to be worked on and values reoriented, the placement of Venus in the house brings Venus’ beneficial vibrations to the house through physical, emotional, mental, and/or spiritual appreciation.
The basic personality function of this planet, Venus, is to develop an awareness of others.
Expansive, extending Jupiter is still happily roaming freely in detached and Mercurial Gemini. Remember, don’t micro-manage and/or over-analyze relationships and partnerships right now; use the rule of Admiral Byrd’s thumb:
When problems arise, when pressures mount, follow the wise rule Admiral Byrd used when his ship was locked in the ice of the Antarctic: “Give the wind and tide a chance to change.”
In our region, Jupiter is traveling through the 8th house of the quiet and psychic secret forces of life; Scorpio ruled house; healing realms.
This is an excellent time for spiritual activities; meditations. It’s also an excellent time for medical procedures; surgeries, especially with Mars (action) in Scorpio (heal).
Saturn’s in its last lap in exalting Libra and will make its first steps into Scorpio on Friday night.
Saturn in Libra is exalted so it’s a highly auspicious position for Saturn. Relatedness to life is key right now with the soul’s taskmaster, Saturn, riding through the relationship sign of the Zodiac, Libra.
In the body, the kidneys purify; Libra rules the kidneys and relationships; relationships purify the soul.
“Saturn is exalted in Libra for it is through the sign of relationships that we grow in grace. If a person lived on a desert island by himself he would have no problems. Only through patience, endurance, responsibility, and humility can we learn to relate to to other people. Saturn demands cooperation, not competition.”
The backfield of the Zodiac, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, have longer reaching effects because they’re farther away from Earth than the first seven. (The Sun and Moon are referred to as planets in astrology; astronomically, they are considered luminaries).
They are all at the first decanate of the constellation they’re touring so all will stay here for a long while:
Uranus is in Aries; Neptune is in the sign it rules, Pisces; Pluto is in Capricorn.
