Assassin’s Creed 3, of which is showcased in the slide-show above, will be implementing a brand-new protagonist into the story of the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Speaking about the continuation of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, and the use of sequels revolving around the same character, Ubisoft has given insight to these details through an interview with Eurogamer, which was published on September 28.
Through this interview, insight was given on the process of making the decision of developing a sequel around Assassin’s Creed 3, or moving on to another plot for the next Assassin’s Creed game. In response, Alex Hutchinson states the following:
It’s hard to answer that without giving spoilers… Our goal is to ship a game every year but never to develop a game in a year. So obviously there has to be some decision-making before the previous one comes out. If there’s a huge response [to Connor] then obviously it will fit into our future plans.
Fans may remember a statement that was previously released by Ubisoft, stating that they plan to keep the Assassin’s Creed franchise on an annual release schedule. In response to this, fans came to criticize Ubisoft, saying that this type of release schedule would ruin the quality of Assassin’s Creed. In response, Ubisoft states:
But the thing is, fans still have the assumption that it is just one team. Our band [at Ubisoft Montreal] does not put out an album every year, but the label does. I do agree, we couldn’t put out a game like this every year and have it stand up.
The argument comes back to what I said at Gamescom. If we can’t keep the quality up, that’s an issue. If it’s amazing then I don’t have a problem with it being released yearly – because we have more than one group of people working on it.
In conclusion, fans should realize that this release decision is made by Ubisoft because they realize that they can keep the quality of their content at a high level. Even though Assassin’s Creed titles will be released each year, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the development cycle of these titles will only last one year, as multiple teams work on these projects.
