Android TO Technology Conference 2012
On October 25, 2012, almost 800 android designers, developers, and business developers gathers to network and discuss the Android platform as it related to mobile development in Canada. Housed at the Scotia Bank Theatre, this day conference was a collaboration of Android minded individuals, businesses and companies and this conference was organized by AndroidTO.
The morning keynote speaker was Kim Pimmel of Adobe. Considered a visionary in the IT design world, Kim wowed with his designs and concepts. Kim stressed the concept of “responsive design”. A designer listens to his main audiences and then reacts. His designs begin on mobile first as mobile is the most constrained medium. By designing on the most constrained medium, the designer becomes agile and adept at his or her craft. “First you must learn the rules before you can break them”, said Kim.
“IT design is about constraint and simplicity”, remarked Kim as he played a video clip of soap bubbles, light accompanied by music. A designer keeps trying and reiterating. For Kim, the design process is personal experiences leading to experimentation and this experimentation leading to revolutionary designs. Kim advocates using a macro lens for magnification as a manner to change one`s design perspective.
Currently, there are 500 million Android activations worldwide and Android comprises roughly 68% of the global Smart phone market. Therefore, the power of the Android market cannot be ignored nor underestimated. A designer must react to the market and a designer must also consider the Android market. A simple rule of thumb is to try to reduce the number of taps for a mobile app. Make the buttons as big as possible. These two simple design concepts create a smooth and simple mechanism for app manipulation.
According to Kim Pimmel, the mobile market is a computer for all. While, the Smart Phone still is used primarily for phone, text, photos, and games, it can and will be so much more. “ A good designer knows that 1 pixel can be the difference between good and great, “ remarked Kim.
Kim closed his presentation with a message of inspiration. If you can dream it, then build it. The Android platform is a design friendly platform that allows users the tools to create and explore. The Android design ecosystem is user friendly and provides the tools for superior design. As Toronto was recently surveyed as the 4th best city worldwide for IT development, he expects great things from the Android design community.
