Alexandra Butler is a Professional Makeup Artist based in Atlanta, Georgia, known most recently for being one of the core makeup artists for the #1 show on cable television, Vh1’s Love and Hip Hop Atlanta. Her celebrity clientele range from award winning rapper Da Brat, to cast members of The CW’s Vampire Diaries. From fashion shows, to photo shoots, to TV shows, Alexandra has made her “Beauty Mark” in the Atlanta beauty & entertainment industry.
Currently, Alexandra is touring the country offering her A Beautiful Face: Makeup 101 classes in several major cities including New York, Atlanta, and Dallas. This weekend, the MUA will bring her skills to Chicago. She took time out between making clients beautiful and teaching classes to provide some insight into her practice and what can be expected during this Saturday’s event.
M: What can attendees expect from A Beautiful Face: Makeup 101 Chicago edition?
A: Attendees can expect to be fed, relaxed, and inspired in an uplifting environment. They will learn how to perfect their own personal makeup application as well as for others (Makeup Artists.) I go into depth from beginning to end on how to apply your makeup, and address any personal questions, while giving some of my favorite tips and tricks. Not only do they receive information and instruction, but they will get up to $100 worth of beauty products that will be a great addition or start to their makeup kits.
M: How long have you been in the makeup artistry industry, and where did you get your start?
A: I’ve been doing makeup for about 3-4 years professionally. Growing up, I was always an artistic child, so painting and drawing came naturally to me. I figured out I wanted to pursue makeup when I was known for doing my makeup and others’ very well. I then applied for a freelancing job at the new MAC counter that was in my local mall in South Bend, Indiana and the rest is history. I went from freelance to part-time, to full-time, to now working for myself.
M: Do you have a favorite celebrity client? What do you enjoy most about working with them?
A: I love all of my clients, not just the celebrity ones. That is one reason why I don’t call myself a “Celebrity MUA”. To me, that doesn’t make me more or less special than the next MUA. I love to work with anyone who wants to work with me. I also value when a client lets me have all creative control and they trust me to fulfill their vision for their makeup.
M: If you weren’t doing makeup artistry, what would you be doing?
A: If I wasn’t doing makeup artistry, I know what I would not be doing! Not pursuing a career in my degree, Industrial Engineering. I realized a long time ago that the engineering/manufacturing industry was not for me. One job I can see myself mastering is Fashion Design; which is what I originally wanted to do, and then all of my focus went to makeup. But I have always been obsessed with fashion and am a huge fan of Project Runway. I don’t see how those designers do the things they do.
M: After the A Beautiful Face: Makeup 101 class tour ends, what can your fans expect next?
A: Working on various television shows and movies, traveling the world, still tending to my clients globally, and working towards the steps necessary to create my own Makeup Academy. I want to establish a Makeup Academy that gets MUA’s ready for the real world with practice and to teach attendees the ins and outs of the business, as well as perfecting their skill . . . coming soon in 2015.
