Akbar restaurant in garden city, long island has a superb reputation for serving some of the best indian food .I have always been an admirer of Indian culture, music, spirituality, and cuisine. After talking to a many of my indian clients and friends, Akbar was the name they immediately recommended as the best indian food on long island.
Akbar occupies a regal looking building on south street, southeast of roosevelt field mall. The restaurant is owned by Meena Chopra and managed by her able director of catering Sandeep Soni. The venue is large and divided into a series of spacious and beautifully decorated rooms for dining and catering.
Sandeep led us to our table and had prepared a special tasting menu so that we could sample the wonderful tastes of india. Our meal began with a delightful rose colored yogurt drink and an assortment of traditional indian breads: Naan- an indian soft flour leavened bread, and Poori- deep fried whole wheat fluffy bread.
We were then served a delightful series of Akbar specialties:
Prawn Aftabi- Tiger shrimp grilled over charcoal, Chicken Malai Kabal- tender chicken pieces moistened with yogurt, ginger and herbs. and succulently grilled lamb chops marinated and grilled. Each dish elegantly served on fine china and brass bowls.
Sandeep then presented chicken tikka masala– boneless chicken grilled and cooked in a creamy tomato sauce. Absolutely delicious….
Since vegetarian food is an important component of any indian meal, we were served an assortment of vegetarian delights: Palak Paneer- chopped spinach and special cottage cheese in a mild cream sauce. Chole Peshawari- Chickpeas cooked North Indian style.
At this point we were presented with an array of aromatic and delicious indian desserts: Kulfi- indian ice cream flavored with cardamon and saffron, Gulab Jamun-golden brown rounds of milk dipped in honey syrup and Kheer– a rice pudding specialty from india.
Meena and Sandeep invited us for a walking tour their beautiful venue…. Each of Akbar’s dining and catering rooms are impressive and beautifully decorated. According to Sandeep these rooms are consistently booked for large indian weddings and affairs, many with over 500 people in attendance.
Akbar is glamorous, exciting and offers a spectacular array of authentic indian dishes.
