In the realm of colleges and universities there is a major problem that is having an adverse effect on student success. These higher learning institutions decision makers decided that they would save tons of money by utilizing a part-time work force.
Take a look at the nation’s number one community college.
Valencia College won the 2011 Aspen Prize for best community college. This institution is one of the exceptions in terms of incorporating adjuncts into their learning environment. Two examples are Valencia Adjunct Learning Academy and Destinations.Unfortunately another significant area needs to be addressed. Lack of adjunct essentials, meaning drastically underpaid and an absence of benefits except for a retirement program [only the adjunct contributes].
The national higher learning education model since the early 1970s encourages colleges and universities to over hire adjuncts. This trend of cost reduction has taken precedence over student achievement. Education is extremely important to the nation’s viability but shamefully run like any other enterprise. Students ultimately suffer because those in charge of education pray that the adjuncts are passionate. Hoping that since their calling is teaching, it will become primary rather than worrying about personal concerns. For some part-time instructors they are in a financial position where benefits and compensation mean little. These educators can give 100% toward student development.
This situation is not the norm for most adjuncts. Survival takes priority. Many over extend themselves adjuncting in other schools to make a livable wage. They hope that a full-time job will open but the competition is excessive due to few spots. Part of the problem stems from advertising the position outside of the institution. Adjuncts view this matter as insulting or a slap in the face. The prevailing attitude is not being good enough for full-time promotion. Of course administration will counter with wanting to bring in more talent. Another problem worthy of mention is what disciplines are required for graduation? For example at Valencia College history is not required. This situation adversely affects whether or not full-time positions will be created in this field.
“Budget cuts and hiring constraints have pushed colleges to adopt a new university faculty model that many would argue exploitatively devalues the classroom professor.” (Adjunct Project) Bottom line is the existing part-time education model harms the student.
