“During a debate on Tuesday night, (October 25th, 2012) Indiana GOP Senate candidate Richard Mourdock said that women who have been raped should be required to carry resulting pregnancies to term because the pregnancy is “a gift from God” that “God intended to happen.”
– Quoted from Ms. Magazine “Feminist Wire Newsbriefs”
Life is no more a gift from God as rain, or sunshine or tornadoes or trees. A seed sprouts when you water it. Life begets life. Man begets man; and according to both human and divine laws, mankind has the right to exercise free will without exception.
As Clinton recently stated (Sept. 20th, The Daily Show) in an interview with Jon Stewart.
“The problem with any ideology is it gives the answer before you look at the the evidence. So you have to mold the evidence to get the answer you’ve already decided you’ve got to have.”
This is exactly what pro-lifers have to do. They start with the belief “Taking an innocent life is bad.” and have to mold every bit of material they are presented with to fit with that answer.
In the case of rape, Mourdock is suggesting that the rapist, an evil-doer, is providing a gift from God. This is reflected in a new study done by RAINN, 97 of every 100 rapists receive no punishment. As a society this sends the message once again, that the victim is to blame. This places the responsibility entirely on the bearer of the child. While the perpetrator walks free or with little punishment, the woman is saddled with the child and with no support from the government.
This control over the personal lives of women is completely counter to the conservative ideal of “Live free or die.” If the conservatives want absolute freedom, it must include our physical rights.
Once again, this is a feminist issue as society is telling women that their established lives are of no consequence – their feelings, their needs are not as important as the potential of life.
Worship of the mystical and obedience to dogma is the greatest thing threatening morality and human rights today. The world is quickly moving past magical thinking and these are the last desperate claws of the mystic.
Liberals, take heart, the last ravings from the right are the pleas of a dying ideology. It might seem like women’s rights are crumbling in the 21st century but if anything, this extremism is a sign of its undoing. The fervor comes from fear of change. They know they will lose.
