ABC’s Premiere week: ‘Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars’ recap
The premiere of season 15 of ‘DWTS’ brought 13 of the ballroom’s best and most favorite contestants back for an all-star face off. Host Tome Bergeron, who just won the 2012 Emmy the previous night for Best Reality Show Host, was on hand with co-host Brooke Burke Charvet as were show judges, Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba.
Joey Fatone of N’Sync and Kym Johnson went first with a Cha Cha that was more like week 7 or 8 level of performance. The two danced together in season 4 and the chemistry was strong.
Olympic winning gymnast Shawn Johnson and 3-time champion Derek Hough are dancing together for the first time. Their Foxtrot was crisp, sharp and full of fancy footwork.
Fan favorite Sabrina Bryan and new partner Louis Van Amstel charged out with a fiery Cha Cha that had impact. Len called it his favorite of the night so far.
Racer Helio Castroneves and new partner Chelsie Hightower danced next, doing a light and fun Foxtrot that was engaging.
Pamela Anderson danced next with Tristan McManus. The Cha Cha was nowhere near the caliber of the other dancers but it was respectable.
Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani reunited for a Foxtrot that was very theatrical and silky smooth.
Apolo Anton Ohno and new partner Karina Smirnov hit the stage in neon lights for their Cha Cha that needed a little more hip action according to Len.
Gilles Marini was paired with Peta Murgatroyd for a Foxtrot that was all old time Hollywood, filled with panache and style.
Reality star Bristol Palin was reunited with Mark Ballas and Cha Cha-ed her way to a “most improved” label.
Former 98 Degrees boy band member Drew Lachey was teamed with Anna Trebunskaya for an energetic Foxtrot that was a little too rigid but good.
Season one champion Kelly Monaco danced with Val Chmerkovskiy for the first time in a Cha Cha – a dance that wasn’t in the schedule back ion season one and she nailed it.
Kirstie Ally and Maksim Chmerkovskiy were reunited and hope to do better than second place this time out. Dancing a Foxtrot that wasn’t as polished as judges were hoping for, the pair landed close to the bottom of the leader board.
Reunited winners Emmet Smith and Cheryl Burke returned to the floor with a Cha Cha that sizzled and had flair.
