Why go to Paris for cafe culture when it’s right in your own backyard?
Le Caprice Cafe and Bakery is a jewel in Columbia Heights. It has the feel of a Parisian cafe. You can sit outside (during the warm season) and watch the world go by. The food in the display cases are neatly assorted-and tempting. You will want to sample everything.
What makes this cafe and bakery different from other coffee shops?
“The importance of the bakery is the kitchen,” said owner Ahmad Erfani. “People can see what we do.”
Passersby can watch Manijeh Erfani prepare the food through the window. She looks up and smiles. She definitely loves what she is doing.
Some coffee shops serve food that is processed and sealed from big box wholesalers and sell individually at higher prices. The Erfani family demonstrates the time and effort into their baked goods and palatable sweets. The breads, desserts and pastries (excluding bagels) are made by hand. The ingredients make a difference. The Erfanis use butter in their cooking.
“We don’t use preservatives or margarine,” he said. “We prefer that everything be natural.”
Preservatives and hydrogenated oils do inhibit food from going bad. However, they can obstruct the body’s ability to break it down so as to acquire energy from and to run or work adequately. At Le Caprice, you can enjoy and savor real food.
Chocolate lovers can rejoice with the chocolate dome. Recommended by co-worker Audrey, it is a combination of chocolate macaron, chocolate mousse and pastry cream smothered in dark chocolate. Handmade chocolate designs compliment the pastry. Accompany it with cardamom tea which soothes the stomach and the soul.
Farhang Erfani, co-owner and son of Ahmad, recommended the caramel cream puff pastry. Good choice. It’is a puff pastry filled with pastry and whipped creams and a crystallized caramel on top. It was the right amount of sweetness and so delicious. You definitely want to get another serving.
“In France, macarons are the jewelry of the pastry,” said Erfani. “They are not easy to make. They are time-consuming.
Who needs to make them when you can drop in and savor these little gems? One bite into the mango macaron and your eyes will open wide. This little confectionery has an abundance of flavor. Le Caprice currently serves eight flavors.
The quiche lorraine is a best seller. Turkey bacon is replaced with ham. The tart is consistent. The egg filling is so smooth texture that a fork can easily go through it. It was like eating a cloud and that is a wonderful feeling. Farhang eats it daily like a slice of pizza. You would too once you bite into it!
Le Caprice provides a tranquil and friendly space. You can get your work done, read a book, or converse with the employees. The shop played different genres of French music. I even heard “Shaft” in French!
