‘A Crowd of Demons,’the fifth episode of “666 Park Avenue” which aired Sunday, October 28, 2012 at 9:00 p.m., featured events at The Drake on Halloween in time periods – the present and 1929 which lead to the revelation of the smoke man’s identity.
Last week, front desk clerk Tony (Erik Palladino), acting in a trance-like state, opened the suitcase that Jane (Rachael Taylor) had retrieved from the basement. A smoky fog poured into the room and later materialized into an eerie looking man who stared at Jane while she slept. In episode 5, we learned his identity: Peter Kramer (Jim True-Frost).
Peter Kramer and an unidentified man are in the elevator of The Drake in 1929 on Halloween, discussing an ominous business deal that involved a ritual that would make them rich but left blood on their hands. When Kramer returns to his apartment, he tells his wife he’s had a bad then proceeds to hack her up with an axe, saying, “In heaven, you will be truly happy.”
Kramer’s daughter, the little ghost girl (Ursula Parker) Jane keeps seeing, runs and hides under her bed. With her dying breaths, the girl’s mother finds the girl and hands her a necklace, telling her to keep it safe and keep it in the family. It is the locket Jane’s grandmother gave her.
In the present, Kramer is strolling through The Drake on Halloween, seeming to look for something…or someone. At the Halloween party, someone bumps Jane, causing her to spill her drink and then return to her apartment to change. The ghost girl appears to Jane and warns her “He got out.” When asked who, she says, “Daddy.” Jane looks in the suitcase and sees nothing but then finds a newspaper article about the Kramer family tragedy in the lining that explains the wife’s murder and that the daughter survived and learns the name of Peter Kramer.
While there, she hears a noise and arms herself with a knife. Seeing no one, she returns to her bedroom where Kramer, waiting, lunges at her. Jane breaks free and a chase ensues that travels all through the Drake with Kramer in hot pursuit – carrying an axe. At one point, Jane escapes by hoisting herself up one floor in the dumbwaiter. At another, Jane finds another tenant with a cell phone, which she borrows to call the police. Kramer comes up from behind and splits his skull with his axe.
Finally Jane is able to call Henry (Dave Annable) and asks him to come help her. He tells Laurel, the media specialist who’s been dogging him all day to call the police.
Jane is cornered in an empty apartment with Kramer wielding his axe. He tells her, “I have to save you. In heaven you will be truly happy.” He swings at her, she ducks and he hits the wall, releasing hundreds of starlings who swarm him. Jane makes it into the hallway where she finds Henry.
In the closing moments, the axe disappears into the floor. The hole in the wall seals itself. The body of the cell phone owner and his blood vanish from the hallway.
What mission is the smoke man Peter Kramer on? Why is he so interested in Jane? What importance does her necklace hold? Tune in next week to find out.
