Gluten-free diets are intended for those who suffer from a gluten intolerance or celiac disease, which requires avoiding products that contain wheat, rye and barley. However, gluten-free diets have gained a reputation as a weight-loss tool, which is rooted in the misconception that they are low in carbohydrates.
Processed food manufacturers have jumped on board with gluten-free packaged goods such as crackers, waffles, and chips. For people who medically require a gluten-free diet, the uptick in product availability makes overhauling one’s diet more attainable. For the rest of the population interested in gluten-free as a way to diet, skip the gluten-free processed snacks and experiment with recipes from a gluten-free cookbook using whole foods like meat, fish, rice, fruits, and vegetables.
There is increasing desire o go “gluten-free” for the sake of weight loss. However, this is not what is happening as they continue to face frustration with what they see on the scale. Unless you have a gluten intolerance or celiac disease, a gluten-free cookie is not healthier than a regular cookie.

Artificial sweeteners have caused controversy in the nutrition field since their accidental discovery. Although there haven’t been any conclusive long-term studies on Splenda, short-terms studies have found that heavy use resulted in shrunken thymus glands, an enlarged liver, and kidney disorders in rats. In addition, many experts believe that the use of artificial sweeteners can cause weight gain. And even though Splenda came out with a line with added fiber, that encourages unhealthy eating habits: consumers are misled and taught to get their fiber from sugar, as opposed to whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and nuts.
Splurging on Celeb-Style Cleanses It is important to know that your body naturally detoxifies itself through our lungs, kidneys and our skin. We are feeling more “toxic” than ever with our over-consumption of processed foods and simple sugar. However, the solution is not a $50/day cleanse.
The likelihood of maintaining the weight lost is very small as most of it is water and if you are doing an extended cleanse, you may also start to breakdown metabolically active tissue like muscle. This in the long-term can lead to a slower metabolism which in essence makes weight gain much easier.
If you are a chronic dieter and looking for a way to “clean” things up, start with your pantry, fridge and mindset. Quick fixes don’t end in lasting results. For maximum nutrition, aim to fit whole fruits and veggies into your diet the old-fashioned way.
