The 2012 NFL season kicks off (intentional) tonight with the Dallas Cowboys v New York Giants NFC East showdown. Fantasy football owners are, by nature, action freaks, but you want to protect against getting over anxious. Just because you drafted a bunch of wounded Cowboys does not mean you have to poison your Week 1 lineup with them.
My fellow Fantasy Football Challenge competitor, Scott, who is helping with our weekly point spread picks, will also join us here to examine vital fantasy roster decisions. Scott knows a thing or two about decimating an otherwise promising fantasy team, so his advice should not be wholly discounted:
Having drafted Miles Austin and Tony Romo, Scott is already talking trade. If Austin can find and remain on the field, however, this should be an excellent start. Giants CB Prince Amukamara will miss this game and Terrell Thomas is out for the season. Corey Webster will likely mark Cowboys WR Dez Bryant, freeing Austin to put up fine numbers before breaking his leg.
Romo could also have a promising night, as the ‘Boys will likely need to throw, but if you were smarter than Scott, and drafted a better QB option, look into it.
Scott is playing his brother this week in our fantasy league, and will be facing DeMarco Murray. We suspect it is a hedge when Scott says, ” DeMarco Murray will be leaned on heavily to slow the Giants pass rush, blah, blah, blah.”
Cowboys Must-Starts: WR Miles Austin, RB DeMarco Murray
Cowboys Must-Sits: TE Jason Witten, RB Felix Jones
Despite letting him down in a dubious wager involving Pittsburgh’s Mike Wallace, Scott again drafted WR Hakeem Nicks. Illustrative of Scott’s team as a whole, Nicks hobbles into 2012 on bad legs, and his start tonight is questionable. Eli Manning is going to want to validate his 2011 Super Bowl season, and will throw copiously to anyone on the field. Victor Cruz should come down with several of these passes.
Either Giants running back could be reasonable play, though even if this game gets out of hand, given Ahmad Bradshaw’s injury propensity, rookie RB David Wilson could see enough action to render merely average numbers for both of them. You likely have better options than these on your fantasy team. If not, Scott can’t even help you.
Giants Must-Starts: QB Eli Manning, WR Victor Cruz
Giants Must-Sits: RB Ahmad Bradshaw, RB David Wilson
