Dylan Alton of Penn State and Northwestern’s Jason Welch each hope the third time’s the charm as they are set to wrestle each other in the 157-pound match at the 2012 NWCA All-Star Classic on Saturday, Nov. 3 at American University’s Bender Arena in Washington, D.C.
The two Big Ten matmen have faced each other twice in college. Welch won their first regular-season match, 2-1. Alton avenged that loss at the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, defeating Welch 6-2 in the match for third place.
It’s Welch’s second consecutive invitation to the All-Star Classic. In 2011, the Wildcat mat star defeated Granbayar Sanjaa of American University in an 8-5 decision.
Welch is a two-time NCAA All-American. Last year as a redshirt junior, Welch compiled a 27-3 season record, with a perfect 15-0 mark in dual-meet competition, and 8-0 in the Big Ten. In addition, he tallied the most team dual points and most net takedowns for Northwestern in 2011-12.
After taking advantage of a redshirt season his first year at Penn State, Alton launched his college mat career in the 2011-12 season, taking third place at both the Big Ten championships and the NCAAs earlier this year to earn All-American honors. Alton crafted a 30-10 record his freshman year as a Nittany Lion, with a 12-2 dual-meet mark, and 6-2 record in Big Ten competition.
Both wrestlers will have the in-person backing of teammates at the 2012 NWCA All-Star Classic. Alton will be joined by fellow Penn Staters Nico Megaludis at 125 pounds, David Taylor at 165, and, at 197, Quentin Wright. In addition to Welch, Northwestern will be represented by Mike McMullan at heavyweight.
The National Wrestling Coaches Association announced that the 2012 NWCA All-Star Classic has sold out in advance of the competition. Only corporate sponsorship tickets remain.
