Whether it came from your mother or your best friends, all of as one point or another have received bad beauty advice. Since we retire makeup trends with the new seasons, it may be time to retire some of these old and bad beauty tips with it.
Bad beauty tip #1: Preparation H for your eyes. Ok, maybe at some point this was true. Back in the 70s Preparation H did have a mercury compound in it that did have a constricting effect on puffy skin but since then the formula has been reformulated and no longer has mercury but hydrocortisone. Now hydrocortisone is an anti-inflammatory but the packaging clearly states to not put any wear near the eyes. To reduce puffiness around the eyes, try a cool compress. Works just as well and won’t irritate the skin or the eyes.
Bad beauty tip #2: Applying moisturizer to damp skin. The theory behind this is that the pores are open and will be absorbed into the skin. In actuality what will happen is that the just sits on top of your skin and slides off making applying anything else to the skin virtually impossible.
Bad beauty tip #3: Putting lemon juice on your face to get rid of freckles. This actually will work the opposite way! Lemon juice contains Limonene a chemical that gives it a citrusy smell. When Limonene comes in contact with UV rays it will cause discoloration. So if you put lemon juice on your face to rid yourself of dark spots and go out into the sun without sunscreen you’ll end up with spots instead of getting rid of them.
Bad beauty tip #4: In a hurry and don’t have time to apply blush? Well pinch your cheeks to get the blood flowing and it will brighten your cheeks naturally. Stop if you do this! All you will succeed in doing is breaking blood vessels in your face which can lead to bruising. Definitely not a good look for anyone.
Bad beauty tip #5: Using toothpaste to dry up a pimple. Toothpaste is made up of fluoride and fluoride has no anti acne properties what so ever and since toothpaste is flavored the flavoring like mint and cinnamon can actually irritate the skin, make the pimple worse and in some instances even burn the area around the pimple.
Bad beauty tip #6: Getting a “fish pedicure”. Salons are importing in certain fish known as Garra rufa or “Doctor Fish” and are placing them in a pool where you submerge your feet and allow the fish to eat the dead skin off your feet. Not only does it sound nasty it is since the same fish are used over and over to feed on many clients. Currently the US has banned this practice in many states.
Bad beauty tip #7. Brush your hair 100 times to make it soft and glossy. Not really. In actuality all you will end up doing is breaking the hair and causing it to frizz.
Bad beauty tip #8: Rubbing coffee grounds on your thighs to get rid of cellulite. The theory behind this one is that coffee has caffeine in it and therefore by rubbing your thighs with caffeine it will reduce the signs of cellulite. Caffeine is found in many anti cellulite creams but there are no reliable researches done on this to prove that this will work alone and you may just end up with dirty looking legs.
Bad beauty tip #9: Use a toothbrush to remove the flakes from your lips and soften the skin. Your best bet would be to use a soft washcloth instead. A toothbrush is too rough for the thin skin on your lips and can be damaging.
Bad beauty tip #10: Deep conditioning your hair will make it softer because the cuticles are open due to the heat of the water and the conditioner will penetrate into your cuticles. Nope. The only way you can open the cuticles of your hair is through chemical processing. When you condition your hair the condition sits on top of the cuticle and rinses out with water leaving behind some properties. If you want softer hair then use a conditioner with olive oil or coconut oil as these oils penetrate the cuticle more than others. Also there is no need for heat to make it penetrate better either. It takes 15 minutes to saturate the hair with water whereas with steam it would take 18 hours or more. Now who has 18 hours?
